On X5 models equipped with a diesel engine, the vehicle may unexpectedly lose power steering due to an engine drive belt issue.

BMW will notify owners of affected vehicles during January 2013. An abnormal engine noise may develop prior to failure of the power steering or there may be no symptom related to the recall. If you don't receive notification and you feel you should have, please contact your dealer. It’s helpful to have your vehicle identification number (VIN) handy when you call.
