RepairPal Expert Overview on January 20, 2017

For vehicles that have had a driver's side air bag module replaced during previous service, the replacement air bag assemblies have an inflator which contains propellant that makes the air bag deploy. This propellant may degrade over time, especially when exposed to humidity and temperature cycling. As a result, the inflator may rupture on deployment, which can send metal shrapnel through the air bag, striking vehicle occupants. This could result in serious injury or death.

Recall repairs on your BMW must be performed by a BMW dealership. BMW will notify known owners of affected vehicles beginning in March, 2017. If you do not receive a notification, but wish to check to see if your vehicle is included, please contact one of your local BMW dealerships. They will also check for any other incomplete recalls on your vehicle. For best results, be prepared to provide your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to the service department consultant you speak with.

RepairPal Expert Overview on July 16, 2014

Certain vehicles are being recalled because the passenger airbag inflator may rupture upon deployment. Vehicle occupants could be struck by metal fragments resulting in personal injury.

Owners of affected vehicles will receive an interim notice during August for 2014. Parts are not expected to be available until October 2014. If you don't receive notification in a timely manner and believe you should have, please contact your BMW dealer for further instruction. They may ask for your vehicle identification number (VIN), so please have it handy when you call.
