Battery light

(1999 Ford Ranger)
in Duxbury, MA on August 15, 2009
my battery indicator light comes on now and then and when it does I noticed the battery gauge indicator moves from half way to a quarter of the way down, then the light goes out and the indicator gauge goes back to mid way, why? I figure it's not getting the proper charge or holding a charge. My battery is 5 yrs. old, should I replace it and it would alleviate the problem?

It sounds like more of a problem with the alternator, but I would have the battery and charging system checked out thoroughly. Make sure the battery cables are tight and that they are in good condition.
