Backfire - coil problem?

(1990 Chevrolet 1500 Pickup)

5.7L engine. After starting it either runs fine or idles very low, backfires/hesitates when revved at idle, can accelerate very, very slowly otherwise will backfire and lose power. Local mech said might be coil. No check engine or any other warning light is lit. Suggestions?

Test the ignition coil using an st-125 spark tester.

check ignition module located in distrbutor your local auto parts store will do this for free
