I'm thinking it might be a good idea to look for a vacuum or unmetered air leak with a backfire, too.

most likely the timing belt.thats a dual overhead cam engine and the belt is about $45.it may also be the cam position sensor which is about $17 and very easy to change,its on the right front of the engine out in the open with a connector and a 13 mm bolt.
