Automatic transmission downshifting

(1996 Ford Ranger)
in Noblesville, IN on October 22, 2010
Sometimes the AT doesn't downshift all the way at a stop. Have to manually move the shift lever to 1st. Seems to happen more often upon a quick or rapid stop. Once it fails to downshift it will continue to have problems downshifting until the truck is shut off and a new trip is started. once the downshifting issue has presented itself, sometimes the O/D lite will start flashing. Once the O/D lite comes on, the trans shifts hard (bangs). The trans has been rebuilt and has a new O/D servor motor and all new solenoids. Unit was rebuilt because of an overdrive failure. This downshiftng issue has been present since the rebuild and was not present before. Any ideas would be appreciated.....Bob

The O/D light flashing indicates that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected a malfunction in the transmission and goes into a default mode to avoid or reduce damage to the transmission. Get back to the rebuilder who worked on your truck and tell him the problem. He needs to know there's a problem with your transmission and he should help you with it. At least, that's if the job was done recently and is still within the warrantee period when you tell him.
