It sounds like there could be some more going on with your car than the transmission. If it dies while going in gear, i.e. reverse or jumps while it is being put in a forward gear, it could be an Electronic Throttle Body problem that is not keeping the proper idle speed. There may be a Check Engine Light on as well. I have worked on several Diesel Bugs and I know that there ia a Self Diagnosing system. How many miles are on your car? The trans has no dipstick. The car has to be put on a lift and there are special plugs to be removed and then the trans pan and gasket has to be removed and replaced with the fluid to do the job really correctly. One MUST use the special VW trans fluid as well that is filled form the side of the trans. There is a trans fluid temperature spec to follow when filling the trans as well. This is a job for a VW shop, really. A good independent VW shop should be able to take care of you. These cars require training to work on them. They are not for people who are untrained.
