Alternator going bad-or- something else??

(1999 Ford Taurus)
in Birmingham, AL on May 14, 2011
If I have alot of errands to run or have to drive more than 30 minutes at a time, the motor will just cut off and I'll have to coast to the curb. The battery light comes on during this episode. The battery is 2 yrs. old and even though I'm pulled off the road basically dead, I can still turn on my lights, run the radio, power windows, locks and such. After about 30 minutes of sitting I can start my car back up and drive away as if nothing was wrong.

The 'battery light' is really the charging system light, coming on when the alternator is not charging, like when the engine has stalled or a drive belt breaks. It would be normal for the light to come on if the engine is not running.
That your engine stops running and you may have to sit 30 minutes to restart suggests to me that you are losing fuel pressure or ignition. The way to diagnose this problem would be to attach a test fuel pressure gauge and observe the fuel pressure during running and see whether it fails causing the engine to stall.
Once the engine has stalled, it would be good to check for spark. If there's no spark, then diagnose the ignition system. If there's a fuel pressure problem, diagnose the fuel system. If both fail, diagnose the control system.
I think you need to find a Ford technician.
