A/C Compressor

(1999 Ford Explorer)
in Carmel, NY on May 21, 2010
I attempted to add or charge the a/c with freon. I turned the a/c up to max as the directions say, attached the hose and can. But nothing. Would not take charge, nor did I hear the compressor "kick in" as suggested. Does this mean the compressor is no good, or a switch, or possibly anything else?

here is some info on your system, do you have A/C experience? Do you have the vacuum pump to evacuate the system and the gauges to do the re-fill correctly?
