A/c comp. won't start

(1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500)
I had my 1992 chvy vac. and I charged the system but the cluch will not come on. When I jump the comp. from the batt. it will work. There is a wire connected to the silver tank, should I try testing it?
Thanks, any help is apprecated..

The switch on the "silver tank" where the wires are connected is called the pressure cycling switch. It should have power on one side with the a/c on, if you disconnect and jumper the switch the compressor should turn on. If this does not happen you will need to get a hold of a wiring diagram to help you determine the cause of your problem. If the compressor runs when you jump the cycling switch then you may have a faulty switch.
