A/C blows cold air on idle, but switches to Defrost upon acceleration

(1999 Ford F-150)
in Youngstown, FL on August 13, 2015
Please Help! It's been upper 90's with heat index of 107 lately, so I really need my A/C to work consistently......The A/C itself works fine, blows cold air, but only on idle, or at a constant speed; Immediatly upon acceleration, the A/C automatically switches over from "dash-front facing panel" vents to Defrost vent "at windshield". Once I resume at a constant speed, and no longer accelerating, the A/C automatically switches itself back to vents "dash-front facing panel". I have searched and searched the web with no luck, I thought maybe it was some kind of air flow issue? Maybe a leaky hose or something that is causing loss of air flow?? But I'm certainly no mechanic!.....I'd like to at least have an idea of where the issue is coming from, before taking it into a shop, so that I'm not robbed...They can always see a woman coming and don't hesitate to rack up the bill...Does anyone have any ideas?
