a '72 chevy el camino. has a turbo 350 trans. kickdown cable does not return

(1990 Chevrolet 1500 Pickup)
in Hanover, PA on October 24, 2015
After wide open throttle the cable remains in the open position. Is there a spring inside the transmission that may have come lose or come off? Or is the cable just worn out? Can't find a way to lubricate the cable inside it's casing.

Going to have to drop the pan to remove detent linkage rod cause with the cable locked into passing gear...it can't be unhooked from outside of trans for testing... Reply for more info.
