Our automotive experts have put together the following information about the P050E diagnostic trouble code. We've provided the common symptoms that occur when this code is set along with the frequent repairs that address the issues related to the P050E code.

What Does P050E Code Mean?

OBD-II Code P050E is defined as a Cold Start Engine Exhaust Temperature Too Low

In order for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to maintain efficient fuel economy and minimize the emissions output from a vehicle, the engine exhaust system must reach a critical operating temperature. This temperature must be reached within 15 minutes after engine startup. If the weather is extremely cold, the temperature must rise at least 70+ degrees starting temperature. If the exhaust temperature does not reach operating temperature, the PCM can't accurately and efficiently control fuel economy and emissions. The PCM will set code P050E.

P050E Symptoms

  • Increased fuel consumption

Common Problems That Trigger the P050E Code

  • Ambient air temperature sensor failure
  • Exhaust temperature sensor failure
  • Internal engine failure
  • Powertrain Control Module (PCM) software needs to be updated
