'89 ford ranger 5speed locked up

i have an 89 ford ranger 2wd with the M50D 5speed tranny. one day comming home from work i was comming to a stop from about 30 mph, i pressed in the clutch pedal,put the tranny in nuetral and let out the clutch to coast to a stop. the tranny started making an ungodly sound and almost instantly locked up solid, causing me to skid sideways to a stop, killing the motor.
once i came to a stop i depressed the clutch, started the motor, put it into 1st gear, went to let the clutch out and killed the motor again. the shifter would go into any gear i chose but the truck would not move unless i had the clutch engaged and someone pushing it. even with the tranny in neutral it still turned the motor over when we tried towing it home. (unless i had the clutch pedal depressed)
i currently have the tranny out of the truck and have removed the tailshaft cover and the shift fork cover.
i can easily change gears by sliding the shift rings by hand but regardless of what gear i choose it is locked up solid (nothing will turn)
when i put all shift rings in their neutral positions i still can't turn the tailshaft without the input shaft turning also :( but at the same time everyting in the tranny is turning freely (no bad bearings)
i have spent alot of time with a flashlight and a mechanics mirror trying to see if i could find any obvious damage but can find nothing, no teeth missing on any gear, no badly worn synchros, very little wear on the shift forks and no chunks of anything in the bottom of the tranny.
any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Doug...have you heard the expression..."spend a dollar to save a dime?"...That is what you are doing now...I would suggest that you just BUY a used 5speed transmission and a new clutch set and stop spending your dollars for dimes!

so far i havent spent anything at all........ the cheapest used m50d i can find is $350
i can get a rebuild kit with all synchros,gears,and gaskets for $150. i would rather save the cash and rebuild it with my time and abillity. (will be my first tranny rebuild)
i have found an exploded view of the M50D and can see that there is a needle bearing that separates the two halves of the main shaft.... could that one bearing be my main problem?????
can someone tell me what the possible cause of the lock up would be? so i might know what i'm looking for inside the tranny
