87 honda accord, Coil

how would I know if the coil is bad, there is not spark coming out out the coil

You have to check power to the coil, and the pulse signal from the distributor pick-up. With a test light you should have power to the + side, and when trying to start the car, a flickering signal to the - side. Without these signals, the coil will not work.
