IT ACTS LIKE THE BRAKES ARE KEEPING THE ENGINE FROM REVING UP. WHEN PLACED IN FIRST GEAR IT WILL USUALLY RUN OK, THEN SHIFTING UP MANUALLY IT WILL BOG AND SOMETIMES DIE COMPLETLY.TRANS HAS FLUID.

This may be an engine performance issue, such as a plugged cat converter, misfiring engine, plugged fuel filter or weak fuel pump etc. I would make sure that all of your tune-up parts i.e plugs, cap, rotor, wires, air and fuel filters are in good shape. Then do an engine vacuum test at idle and 3000 rpm. If the vacuum drops at 3000 from the idle reading you may have a damaged converter.
