Q: 2003 chevy malibu dash gauges turn off with car is started on 2003 Chevrolet Malibu

When I start my 2003 chevy malibu, I loose my dash instrument guages (gas, temp and others) and I can't turn on my radio, heater or windows. The car will run fine with no problems. On occassion, when I start the engine, all the gauges will come on for maybe 20 seconds and then turn off.

All I did to fix he Fuel/Temp gauges and AC/Radio, was switch the Fuse to the Body Function Control Module/Cluster. It's locate on the driver side fuse box.
Try checking the right side dash fuse box - make sure the fuses and window circuit breaker have power. If so then check for proper power and ground at the drivers door window switch. My thinking is that if you find the problem with the windows that may lead to the cause of your other problem and the window system is fairly easy to test.
i have a similar problem but my stereo works fine but the gas and the temp gauge dotn work i think it may be the actual fuse but have no idea where it is and which one is it, i had the problem before but the fuse was changed for it if you can email me i will appriciate it
I have a 2001 malibu that did the exact same thing to me today.instermant panel, radio and windows wouldn't work when I started the car. I removed power window breaker, then seems to work for now(without the windows) tryed to get new breaker and could find one. put old breaker back in seem to be working for now(with windows) maybe just bad connection? will still look for a new breaker. if there are any other people who have had this problem and did something else to fix, (wonder if it isn't just the breaker.) I would apprieciate any feedback.

Hello Phillips,

I have a very similar problem: Did you ever figure out what was wrong? If so, I'd love to hear from you.

1) Dashboard lights and console lights will not illuminate under ANY condition
2) Dome light works fine on ALL Settings
3) Radio light works UNTIL foot break is released at which point it goes off (completely).
4) Blinkers and indicating lights do not illuminate
5) Small light that illuminates the "outside air" button works
6) Fan still works on all settings
7) The dimmer has no effect, but all lights controlled by the dimmer appear completely nonfunctional.
When I am driving at night, the car is near completely dark.

Windows in the car are manual.

Since all the affected systems which will not illuminate are controlled by the rheostat, isn't that a likely culprit?

Anyone know where to get a replacement rheostat for a 2003 Chevy Malibu?

Or is it possible to just bypass the rheostat completely and do without the silly luxury of dimming?

Your 2003 Chevrolet Malibu could be having an intermittent fault with the ignition switch. Checking for correct voltage at the fused in the instrument panel fuse box would be a good starting point. If you find low voltage at any of the fuses then checking voltage right at the ignition switch would be the next step.
The dimmer switch on your 2003 Chevrolet Malibu controls an instrument dimming module. This module is located under the dash near the steering column and is the most common failures with the dimming circuit.
