2002 Ford Ranger won't start

(2002 Ford Ranger)
Have been having trouble for a couple of weeks. Turning over but took two or three tries to crank. Got in it today and drove 1/2 mile and parked. Sat there a few minutes and it died. Tried to start it back and it only whirs and won't turn over. Just before this happened I drove through a small pot hole and the truck started making a weird noise. I can't identify it because it was pouring rain. When I got out I heard a slight clacking noise that made my hair stand on end because it sounded like it was about to throw a rod. There was no extra noise when it died. It just quit running.

It's concerning that you had the impact of some sort and resulting problems and noises. A physical inspection should be performed first to see if damage has occurred to the vehicle engine area.

Check the level of engine oil -- is there oil in the engine?

It would not be surprising that the engine could stall due to damage without further noise.

The problem with it not starting was going on before I hit the pot hole. There is oil in it. I was watching to see if the starting problem was the alternator or the starter. It finally stopped raining so I walked back up there and tried to crank it. It sounds like it's definitely the starter. No crank. Just that god awful whir when I turn the switch. If I can find someone to pull it back to the house I'm going to pull the starter so I can examine it for visible damage and take it to be tested. It's been clicking for a while. I'm just scared it could have thrown a rod and locked it down. Praying that isn't it. I'm too broke to replace the whole truck. Fingers crossed. It was really dark and my flashlight is a piece of crap so I am hoping the color of the oil wasn't due to water in it. (milky looking). Pray for me.

I got the truck home and made a video of what it is doing when you try to crank it. I don't see a way to upload that here. Is there some way I can send that and get a better answer?

I am sorry, there is no way to upload a video. My biggest concern is that if your starter will not turn the engine, it could be because the engine is not turning at all. This will cause that noise possibly as well. Wishing you luck.
