1999 Ford Escort Accerleration noise

(1999 Ford Escort)
in Loganville, GA on November 06, 2010
Hello all, I have a 1999 Ford Escort with 120,000 miles which is making a strange noise: after 10 minutes of driving the car, I hear a rattling/whizzing sound when I try to accelerate-it lasts about 4-5 seconds and then goes away- I can drive with my foot on the gas pedal to about 40 mph but when I go over 45 miles per hour (press down on the gas pedal harder) I hear this noise...., the oil has been changed recently, air filter, etc.- I have no problem accelerating though (just the strange noise) and no service engine soon nor check engine light comes on... Anyone have any idea what might be going on? and any fixes to stop the noise?

Thanks,

Edy Escort

Kind of an odd thought to suppliment Shadetreeauto's - but...

...is it a metallic kind of noise? Could be an exhaust or catalytic converter heat shield that is slightly loose and buzzing at different engine speeds and loads. Cheap and easy to deal with if that's the case.

Good luck!

check the air filter housing and inlet tube
