this is the second problem i've had. i had just replaced the heater core. could the compressor cause the problem? it won't even start at all. an mechanic said it's the motor, but it was no warning at all. it just shut down. please give me some clue what's going on.

From what I know the answer is no, I am assuming that you are speaking about an a/c compressor. Does the engine turn over?

Timing chain/belt-if loose or broken the car will crank yet not start up.
Failing fuel pump-no fuel delivery and no ignition
Ignition coil/components-faulty coil or spark plugs can cause engine to not turn on
    Loss of compression-
    Faulty starter motor-car wont crank
    Battery-is it ok?, connected correctly?

so many things can cause a car not to turn on, some newer cars have anti-theft systems that when activated/tampered can keep the car from turning on

p.s. in a case where an engine uses one sole belt (crankshaft,p/s pump, a/c compressor, alternator) to run the engine and the compressor has completely seized up then it might keep the car from turning over yet I would find that to be unlikely.

REPLY with the 'fast codes' and we might be of more help. to retrieve the 'fast codes' , do this; turn the key .....on/off/on/off/on.... see the pattern? the third time 'on' leave it on. If you have a led odometer it may show code numbers instead of mileage ...write them down , you can repeat the key cycles as many times as needed to be sure you didn't miss any. IF you have a 'power loss' or check engine light that will flash codes if not displayed on odometer. The codes would be flashed in a series of blinks ; blink, pause, blink blink would be code 12 5 blinks followed by a pause then 5 more blinks means end of codes.
