my 1990 subaru legacy wagon wouldnt start when leaving to go to work the other morning,checked fuel line its pumping gas,checked all belts they are fine its even getting spark,when trying to start it it occasionally backfires,any suggestions

    your timing is off. have same year make and model, with same problem. make sure your no.1 piston is at top dead center, then assemble timing belt and pulleys accordingly. your car is most likely on its exhaust stroke rather than the firing stroke. not a major problem, some tinkering with the timing should do it.
