1996 Pontiac Grand Am

Question: won't shift into any gear but 1st

Trying to find some answers for my friend on his car. Its a grand am. It'll only go into 1st gear it won't shift into any other gear.It was working fine, then he tried to reverse to back out the drive way and it wouldn't go into reverse so he just pulled forward and the figured out it wouldn't go into second so he just parked it.He just replaced the transmission in it. What could be the problem?

    First and foremost , check the fluid level when the car is idling and in park. If that is ok, then there is a problem with the newly installed Transmission, could even be a linkage problem, or the gear selector switch is not correctly aligned.
