1991 Volkswagen Jetta Question: won't shift into 2nd gear
Answer #1Bret Bodas from RepairPal Test Shop, May 03, 2010, 20:37Master
Is this an automatic or manual transmission?

its manual... also!!! it won't start... it sounds like it wants to but it doesn't catch... battery is good and alternator is good... you can push start it with no problem.... i'm thinking its the starter... any thoughts??

It's best to get the battery, charging and starting system checked to see if the issue is with the starter, battery cables or ignition switch circuit. As for the shifting, you'll want to have the shifter and linkage checked for proper adjustment otherwise it may be an internal issue in the transmission.
Are you planning on diagnosing and repairing this yourself?

yes i am with the help of a family member that's a mechanic. his specialty are toyotas and hondas... but we should be able to manage...how difficult is it to change the linkage??

You'll want to check the linkage to make sure it's not out of adjustment. I suggest you get a good repair manual, it should describe how to check and adjust the linkage.
I suggest one of these sites:
You can access the info online so it's quick and easy.
Have your mechanic check the voltage to the starter, here are some instructions for testing: http://www.excelauto.com/online/Tech.d/strvdt.html
