Wont' pass smog. on 1995 Dodge Intrepid

i have a 1995 Dodge Intrepid that won't pass smog in Nevada due to "visible smoke". I am unable to just take it to a mechanic so I need advise on possible fixes so I can get my brother to help. I am desperate as this is my only means of transportation and I care for my elderly mother. Thanks for any advise you may have.

If you can see smoke you are possibly burning oil, could also be from other sources such as air fuel mixture is off. Some states will wave emmisions test if cost of repair exceeds a set repair cost, but you will need to have profesional diagnose and give written estimate for repair.

Thanks for the info. I will look into the possibility of getting the smog waived. If it is burning oil, what do I look for in the engine? Thanks for any more info you may have.

Causes for burning oil would be from bad piston rings or valve guides and or seals. These types of repairs are not for do it DIY'ers. But may want to check the pvc system.
