i was driving when all of a sudden i lost power and a cloud of white smoke came out the exhaust everything pointed to a head gasket so i replaced it and it still wont fire has spark and fuel

    Check the engine in your 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier for proper compression. Have a look at the spark plugs while they are out to see if the are fouled.

    the plugs were fouled i changed them out and it cranks but it pops like a backfire in the cylinder i can smell gas it leadin to timing can i adjust it without takin the cover off by just turning the crank
