The Boxster had a common feature where the windows would open and close a small way when you open and close the door. This has almost stopped on my driver's door. The window tries to go down a little but then stops. I have thought about possibly trying to clean inside but the window works fine otherwise so I am not sure if this is where the problem is. The big problem is right now the window catches the roof when you open the door. Any ideas?

It could be electronic or mechanical. Perhaps there is a problem with the sensor that detects the door opening and closing? I would guess that cleaning won't help and you'll likely need some professional help.

grease the rubber on the door where the glass slides. goto pep boys get a lubricant spray, the rubber dries out and grabs the dirt on the glass.

The problem you're experiencing is due to a worn power window regulator. I had the same problem with my '99 when it was 9 years old with about 70k miles. The only fix is to replace the regulator. I found very detailed directions on how to replace them online and bought a pair for $450 at Partsbin - an online retailer. The dealership wanted around $700 apiece to replace them.
