will not start or shift on 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

I have shift cable off car.How can you tell if cable is bad?should car start if shift lever is pushed to front of car?

The cable is bad if there's any visible damage or it's sticking. It should move freely if it's off the car. I don't think the car will necessarily start if the gear selector is pushed to the PARK position if the cable is out because I think that the starter safety switch is on the transmission and the switch would have to be in the NEUTRAL or PARK positions. Safety Note: If you do get the engine started and the transmission is not in PARK or NEUTRAL, the car will be in gear and take off on you, so be careful.
