2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Q&A

2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Question: will not start or shift

I have shift cable off car.How can you tell if cable is bad?should car start if shift lever is pushed to front of car? -
Answer 1
The cable is bad if there's any visible damage or it's sticking. It should move freely if it's off the car. I don't think the car will necessarily start if the gear selector is pushed to the PARK position if the cable is out because I think that the starter safety switch is on the transmission and the switch would have to be in the NEUTRAL or PARK positions. Safety Note: If you do get the engine started and the transmission is not in PARK or NEUTRAL, the car will be in gear and take off on you, so be careful. -
