Sometimes when starting the car it won't start. There is a single clicking noise, but the engine will not start. Sometimes it will start up an hour later, or it will start if you hook jumper cables to it. I took it to a mechanic and he said that he couldn't get it to not start so what could be the problem?

Sounds like the starter is not operating, and this can be due to a security system, ignition switch, starter or the wiring to the starter. Check the battery cables, make sure they are clean and tight.
