Question: will not start

Question

For the past couple months my car intermittantly not start. The interior lights come on, but the engine will not turn over at all. After several attempts turning the key, it starts. Yesterday the car was driven, stopping and restarting it 3 times with no problem. On the 4th starting attempt same thing...dead, not turning over and interior lights on. This time we also heard a really soft noise that lasted only about 2 secs each time we tried to start it. Even with the hood up we could not figure out where the noise was coming from. Then without doing anything it started. Now, today, it didn't start again and after many tried still nothing. Things I tried today...a different key and also tried starting in neutral...nothing.
Thanks

sounds like a starter motor that has bad spots on the armature. have it checked to verify.

Thanks for the reply Roy and sorry I haven't gotten back quicker....
Here is an update...One 12/22/10, I took the car to repair shop. They tested the starting system, which included testing battery, connections and cables, starter and solenoid operation and current draw. Results, testing found no signal to the starter relay. Bypassing relay for testing allowed normal start. Traced electrical
system back through the computer for input signal from the neutral safety switch. Testing signal through shift range vehicle started normally. The car started many times over several hours w/o problems.
Decided to wait until after the holdidays and until problem returned. Well, it returned on 1/17/11. Took it to a different shop (1st one unable to do transmission repair),after inspection they said it did not show any codes, but they did replace the neutral safety switch. I picked up my car and after 2 days and 30 miles, same thing happened. Had it towed back to shop. When they went to look at it...it started right up.
With the starting system checking ok and the safety switch replaced, any other ideas it could be?
