thinking of purchasing a 2003 Pathfinder. The buyer says it won't go in reverse. How costly would this be to fix if they are asking $2500?

Have the vehicle inspected by an independent shop, and get a real estimate on the transmission repair before you buy it.

Check Kelly Blue Book, CAREFULLY!! Then go look at the vehicle again after you rate it on KBB. You might as well figure on adding a transmission replacement as well. Just to be safe!!

Id say it depends on how long you plan to keep it and the purchase price. I have a 2003 Pathfinder 4x4 SE myself and dealing with the same issue. I bought the truck 2 years ago with 125,000 miles on it and currently has 230,000. The truck itself is great and can't find 1 negative thing to say other than the transmission. The truck always ran and drove fantastic but one day I went to leave for work and went to back up and NOTHING! Out of the blue I lost reverse. I've checked all the fluid, valves, etc and all were good. After doing some extensive research this is appearently a known issue with Nissans. While it can sometimes be a hassle Ive put another 22,000 miles on my car with no reverse and everything still works great. I have the 3.5ltr engine which Im told is the best engine that Nissan has ever made and told with basic regular maint I can easily get 350,000 plus miles.

Here's the million dollar question, what kind of 4x4 transmission do you have? Theres the "push button" & "shift on the fly". Push button is self explanitary and the shift on the fly one has the additional shifter next to the gear shifter. The shift on the fly one with cost you almost double the price. I was looking into used engines and the difference in them is about 3 times the price and the shift on the fly are MUCH harder to find. Also they are harder to find because they ONLY fit 2003-2004.

That all said if you can get a good price and the mileage is good Id buy it. The transmissions suck but the rest is fantistic
