My 96 ford contour auto drives in the 1st and 2nd and reverse gears, but will not move in Drive. What could the problem be and what is the fix. Is it ok to drive the car like that what will happen? I am makeing a trip about 2500 miles is it safe.

It sounds like one of the clutches has failed in the transmission of your 1996 Ford Contour. I would recommend that you NOT use it for your trip.

like Jim said. it is not safe and will fail completely.
there is internal damage and it needs attention now.

the people I bought it from told me the transmission was fine and all it needed was for the strainer to be cleaned and it would be fine, it will drive in the D position after starting out in 1-2,---being a ole gal with no machanical expertise...is this such a thing or did I get got?!!..Thank you I do thank you for all you help and time in this matter.

sorry, he is not giving you the correct info. replacing the filter will not solve your problem.
take it to a trans shop and let them check it for you to confirm. you will most likely be told that you need a rebuild.

This transmission does not have any serviceable screen or filter. I'm sorry to say it sounds as if you were misled.
