will engine be damaged if belt(s) break while driving? on 2001 Subaru Impreza Outback

Belt(s) squeal when starting car on cold days, goes away as engine warms. Can engine be harmed if belt bteaks while driving?

Can damage engine if overheats and that could happen if belts come off. If you feel the belts could break then replace them and get the correct tension on them.
