I used to see this all the time when I worked at a Lincoln/mercury dealer in New Mexico.Try cleaning the mass air flow sensor out.It is located in your air filter housing and has an electrical connector on it.Parts stores sell a spray can for it,but if you can't find the cleaner just use brake clean and blow it dry. There are alot of other possibilities,I'm just giving you the most likely cause and what I've seen ALOT of.

Sometimes air/fuel mix at higher altitudes. Hope it's that easy and not drivetrain problems.
