Question: why my 2003 toyota prius 24 mpg only?

It is my first car.Really i had expectation my car will go 40 or up mile per gallon but im so disappoined about that only 24 mpg?That not really great for me.Why slould be like that even most of people said 40 or up?why not my one too?The car got just 121300 miles.It not a lot one way but hybrid is different bec of battery.But my battery getting charge too really and dont take so long too.So what wrong i dont know really.I need more mileage just it little milage give me headache.if anybody have any suggestion i will be happy.I need help really.thanks

    None of our Prius customers have ever had such low gas mileage. Even if the check engine light is not on attaching a scan tool and looking at live sensor data to look at fuel trim values long and short term, look at air flow readings into the engine, and look at coolant temperature readings.
    Google "Prius poor mpg", look on Prius web forums some good articles
