The gas cap indicator came on frequently. Then the check engine light came on. There was an emission issue code, so I cleared the error and replaced the gas cap. It happened again the next day. Gas cap indicator until eventually the check engine light came on again. What's the issue. I've been told it is a simple system and it's probably a loose hose. What's my next step? I really don't have the money to take it into a shop.
Why does the check engine light stay on after replacing the gas cap? on 2007 Buick LaCrosse

it is not a simple system. it is complicated. you have a large leak in the evap system and you need a shop with a smoke machine and a scanner. do not clear the code as the tech will need to see the saved freeze frame data to help with the diag. Roy

you need to check out the code first, then you can narrow the car problem, you can go to the auto zone, they check for free.

Engine light stayed on for Buick LaCrosse 2011. Technician diagnosed a faulty catalytic converter. Not a cheap fix. $1100. The converter lowers emissions. Car runs fine but there could be a potential problem if something in the converter becomes dislodged and damages the exhaust system.
