While driving on freeway doing approx. 65-70 mph the gauge will start to bounce then it eventually stops registering.Sometimes it will re-engage while still driving but usually not until i turn the truck off and restart it only for it to happen again. It also happens while street driving but mostly at high speeds, why?

If the check engine light is not on the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) would be the likely cause but if the is no check engine light on there is either a bad connection or he instrument cluster may be faulty.
