the gear lever seems broken...replaced that on the steering column, but it still won't get out of park.

Sorry I am not much help with your Chevy, I'd have to see it to figure out what is wrong.There is a company that independent auto repair shops get their information from, this same information is available inexpensively for people that work on their own cars.. The information is year make and model specific, covering repair procedures, torque specifications, fluid capacities and specifications, service bulletins, component locations, wiring diagrams ect.... Are your brake lights working?
Some vehicles have a solenoid that works off the brake switch.
Key on and step on brake.
If the brake lights are working,it could be the brake switch itself.
