 Rookie

I just purchased my 1998, 740IL last week from a private owner with 140K on the dash.The first problem occured the other night. While driving the trans just went out,so I reved the engine and it kicked back into gear. Continued to drive the next day and had no problems. There wasn't any lights flashing or anything. Just yesterday, while driving the car just came to a screaching halt, and would not move. I turned off the ignition, and tried other drive gears and no go. I finally put it in reverse and proceeded to move forward. What can cause this problem?
