Disconnecting the battery cable does nothing except causing the computer to have to reset the 'monitors' which are checking the sensors and systems to detect faults in the engine control system. You may have lost the data you need to get the thing diagnosed properly. Once the light's on, there are diagnostic codes and data stored which would be helpful in diagnosing the problem. Changing the oil is not going to fix it (the oil filter's mounted on the side of the engine block). I think you need to forget auto parts stores for diagnostic work and find a Mitsu specialist. You should be able to get a real diagnosis for about 1 hour's labor time at a 'real mechanic.' If you want to find a specialist, here's a directory link for you: https://repairpal.com/directory?address=23169&car_brand_names=Mitsubishi

Thanks for your reply. At last figured filter had to be up under a big rectangular plate about 2'X3' being held up by "2" 14mm bolts. Rather than risk clunking myself on the head I reset the "check engine soon" light and took to NAPA. Two trips and 2200 miles later, light has not come back on. Thanks for your advice.
