    when there is a problem reading the correct temp.

    Since the vehicle dies the first couple of times I start it, and it doesn't have a choke, I thought this might be the problem.

    thats called a coolant sensor. different than the one you asked about.

    a shop with a scan tool can monitor the temp on cold start up to verify it is sending the correct signal to the computer.
