The engine code shows up for a while and then disappears

    there are many steps to solving evap codes. the code means a system not a part fialure. you need to have a smoke test, test all soloniods and controls before saying what is wrong.

    Really need to know exactly which code your getting, I do Emissions
    Diagnosis in California, so I am pretty up on this stuff.

    Most common EVAP failures on Ford Explorers are the fuel filler neck and the Vapor management valve, so PLEASE, DON'T GUESS, send me the code. I have yet to replace a canister on these vehicles, and I used to be a Ford Tech as well.
