my car wont start and im not sure why i think its my alternator. when i try to start the car the first time it will turn over and run for like 2-3 secs and then turn off and when i try again it jus makes a ticking noise like my battery is but but at the same time i'll be getting a jump and that goes to show its not my battery.
where is the alternator located on my car and on average how much do they cost. on 1998 Volvo V70 XC

You can find the price to replace the alternator here: http://repairpal.com/estimator?car_type_id=5547 The alternator is under the power steering pump. I would have the battery and charging system checked prior to replacing the alternator, just to be sure you're not replacing an expensive part that doesn't need replacing.
