So far this year: $1200 (not starting, replace fuel pump relay; A/C, replace compressor and condenser lines); $2000 (A/C belt went + 120k service); now facing $1000 for speedometer replacement. Is it time to quit? Car is solid, 120K miles, looks great, everybody who looks it over says don't get rid of it, don't make cars like that anymore. What do we do?

You are talking about $4200, what kind of car can you get for that amount of money? I had a similar Volvo that went for 336,000. A fuel pump is maintenance, every car's fuel pump will fail, as does the A/C system in a hot climate or humid summer time climate , which the great State of Illinois is.
As for the Speedo, get a used Instrument panel from a wrecking yard, it will cost maybe $100, and do just as good job. Plan to spend about $1200 a year, averaged out for the life of this car. Can you live with a $100 dollar/month car payment or a $700/month car payment? It is your choice.

Stop now, and give it to me. Heh. I've had 15 Volvos and love 'em. 120K mi, you only have about 200-300K left before having to really take care of it. First, stop going to the dealership for everything. Second, visit some of the very good online Volvo forums to learn about taking care of it inexpensively. I converted one of my car's AC to R134 for less than $300, and have a modern system that is cheap to take care of.
Third, 91-92 speedos are an issue; send it to a quality speedo repair shop, price in the $250 range.

I just bought a 1993 940t for $1500.00. I plan on spending about another $1500 to fix it up and then about a grand for a paint job. I will then have a "new"car for for about $4000. WHAT A DEAL!

Now that's the attitude to have! It's all in the attitude and points of reference. This year and model are unbeatable. But if someone honestly doesn't want to put money into something great to keep it great, then someone else will. I BEAM when I walk to my gorgeous Silver 940 Turbo w/212K and sit in my luxury seats and the car purrs ...
All the advice I see is great. Just as with one's health, take responsibility and learn all you can - lots of terrific people are out there to help! I enjoyed seeing the great responses to this issue.
