It does cause the car to shake, as if headed towards a stall out, but then recovers. It is a bit nerve wracking, while you are sitting at a light.

Recent news: I recently got a regular maintenance done on the car, just a run of the mill oil change, etc. They recommended I get my coolant flush done, as per the Mazda recommendation. I opted out of it, but I will get it done soon. However, my check engine light is now on also, even though after the maintenance, the check engine light was OK on the list.

Can someone please help me tell if these things are correlated.

If the Check Engine Light is on then the computer in your car sees a fault and a scan tool will be needed to retrieve the code or codes stored. On retrieval of the codes the code numbers will correlate to trouble shooting procedures. It's the first place to start.
