2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder

Question: When I back up there is a grinding noise coming from the front end.

vehicle also lurches,especially when cold or when wheels are cranked to either side. does not make noise when wheels are straight going forward or reverse.

    Your car is rear wheel drive so it is not half shaft related. I would jack up and support the car remove the front wheels inspect the brake pads calipers and guide pins and look for anything obvious that is rubbing. Feelnto see if you have excess wheel bearing play. There is a company that independent auto repair shops get their information from, this same information is available inexpensively for people that work on their own cars.. The information is year make and model specific, covering repair procedures, torque specifications, fluid capacities and specifications, service bulletins, component locations, wiring diagrams ect....
