2004 Subaru Outback Question: What's the cost to have your manual 5-speed tranny rebuilt

The input shaft has very slight play in it but theout put shaft will move 1/8 inch in any direction It's starting to make a gear noise in 1-4 gears.

    difficult to say without knowing the parts required. a shop will low ball you with a price but it will rise quickly as parts are needed.
    i would plan on about 900-1200. i would also consider a clutch while the trans is out.

    Thanks, I pulled the tranny to check the release bearing and pilot bearing thinking that was the source of the noise. The clutch was worn down and the pilot bearing and release bearing were also worn so I was planning on replacing cluth to begin with before I found the shafts loose. I did find a used tranny with less than 35,000 miles on it--Carfax verified for 1450.00 but if I can get this one rebuilt for 900.00 to 1200.00 I think I'll go that route since I should get a warrantee with it.

    I agree. you dont know the history of the other trans and there is no warranty.
