Question: What would cause the Engine Contro Module to fail?

I recently replaced a light bulb in the headlights of my HHR. Unfortunately I turned the lights on and forgot to turn them off. It killed my battery so I had to have it jump started. Cables were connected correctly as I read the manual before doing so. When I started the car it didn't sound right. When I tried to drive it I could only go about 20mph. I was told that the jump basically fried the engine control module. Needless to say, that light change cost me $600.00! Do you think the engine control module was already defective?
