Question: What is wrong with my truck???

I was driving down the road and all of a sudden- out of the blue- my truck just died. It seemed like i was running out of gas! I tried to restart it several times before i had to call a tow truck. My husband looked at it and when he got it cranked over, he said it sounded like a bunch of rocks in the engine, and noted that smoke was coming out of the valve covers. Someone said that my timing probably slipped and basically ruined my entire engine. Please help!!!!!
