in my 2004 crown vic the switch that changes the blower from blowing thru the ac vents to floor to defrost does not work so in simmer i have to have a mechanic go under the dashboard and set the valve manually to blow thru ac vents and then in winter he has to go under dash to have the blower blow thru the floor for heat. what is the name of this valve and how do i replace it?

Its the mode door actuator and to repair/replace it you need service information which you can get from AlldataDiy.com

just to make sure we are on the same page, i take this car to my local mechanic inthe summer and under the dash behind control head he does something to make ac blow thru ac vents then in the fall/winter i take it back and he does something in the sane lacation to make heat blow from floor vents like a normal heater does. so are we still talking the same part? if yes please accept my deepest gratitude as this is my mom,s car and she is a widow and can not afford for the mechanic to fix it so she relies on me. again thanks p.s. the car does have the automatic climate control system.

If you are asking me, answer #2, then yes this should fix this problem! What he is doing is switching the vacuun from one place to another with a vacuum tube he has made to bypass the selector on the control panel. Now we know the ACTUATOR IS WORKING! No further testing needed. He cannot make the actuator stay in a given position any other way. There are repair services that fix these (ebay) or Dorman from Advance Auto has a good replacement unit. Again this thing is easy to replace, search youtube, there is a video there! Just look for it. By doing this yourself the savings will be, as i stated, HUNDREDS of dollars, so it is well worth looking into!! Do not attemp any other repair you may see on youtube, just replace this part! I know for a fact 'that' WILL work. (This parts swap is a 20 minuet job even for a novice) Good luck, let us know how you make out.

Do not want to seem redundant but you are telling me I need the Dorman part #604214, which is the temperature actuator i looked it up at Rockauto for$32.79.

Well if you are having a problem with the TEMPTURE maybe so! But i understood your problem was the air direction mode selector! No this is NOT an actuator problem!! Read my answer and reply again. Gotta go! Later.

If you have the Auto. Climate control, your problem is 'more' likely to be the 'heater control' panel. Easily tested using only a mighty vac tool, or a piece of small vac. tubing with connectors, to be 100% sure. Very common problem on these Panther Body vehicles. There are great aftermarket replacements also that are ready to plug and play! This thing is very simple to replace if you are just a litttle bit handy with a wrench, or have a buddy that is. Most likely a video on youtube that will show you how, check to see. Can save you some big money if you get your own part and install it yourself. (Hunderds) Seek a mechanic for hands-on help if needed.
