I need some insight into what I should actually pay to have my AC compressor, receiver/drier and orifice tube replaced in my 2001 Nissan Pathfinder. One repair shop has quoted me $1800. Is that too much?

if i am not mistaken, i believe that nissan has an expansion valve. anyway, my numbers come up to 1100-200. if you were at a dealer, that sounds close. i recommend finding a independent shop to give you a bid.

Actually, the establishment that quoted me $1800 was not a dealer. It was an independent local repair shop. Is is safe to say that their price of $1800 is somewhat inflated? I am considering purchase the AC compressor kit from eBay which I believe includes the compressor, receiver/drier and expansion valve. Do you have any experience with purchasing auto parts on-line? I'm just wondering if it's a good idea or not. Also, another question, is the expansion valve the same as an orifice tube?

I dont buy on line for the reason of warranty. if there is an issue you must chase these people and hope they back up there product. I would rather pay someone local at a parts house with a national warranty. it is a good piece of mind.

There are many things that are factors in the cost of AC repair. 1800$ seems like a high number, but, what is the warranty, is it a shop that will be around if there is a problem, what are they doing, repair/ replacement wise to completely repair the system?

    Thanks for your reply, dale45.

The warranty on the work for the shop that quoted me 1800 was a 1 year, 12,000 mile warranty. Not a very good warranty for the price. I checked around and got some other quotes and most of the other repair shops are quoting between 900 and 1400. I think the shop quoting 1800 is way out of line...
